Girls’ Night Out

There is a particular sound a house makes when women have gathered inside.

Laughter slipping beneath doors.

Voices crossing over one another.

Rokurokubi has made herself comfortable in the peculiar way only she can. Yuki-onna has brought winter into summer with her, cold mist gathering quietly at her feet.

And Mokumokuren watches from the walls.

Still, there is laughter.

Girls’ night.

Outside the room, the house grows darker. Flowers disappear into black.Eyes surface where there should be none, appearing and vanishing again.

And at the front stands Yuki-onna.

Silent.

Beautiful.

Her furin moves gently in the night air.

Perhaps you heard its glass note before you heard the women laughing.

Perhaps that should have been your warning.
